Chocolatey – Package Management for Windows

Chocolatey is a package manager for Windows. It is like apt-get or yum. I was really thinking that the package management and installation of software for windows was a pain. Now you can have a tool to easily install and update your most used software.

Installation is very easy. Just open a command prompt as administrator and run the command below:
C:\> @powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy unrestricted -Command "iex ((new-object net.webclient).DownloadString('https://chocolatey.org/install.ps1'))" && SET PATH=%PATH%;%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\chocolatey\bin

The installation will take some time. After the installation is complete restart your computer.

After restart open command prompt and type choco to see if it works fine:

Installing Packages
Now lets try to install Google Chrome:
1. Goto chocolatey web site to check the package names and their installation and search for chrome. https://chocolatey.org/

Copy the installation string:

Open command prompt as administrator and past the installation command. After running command you will see that chrome is successfully installed.

From now on you can install software like firefox, javajdk, adobe flash plugins from command prompt and with one command. You only need to know the package name.
